Officials confirmed that Spanish police arrested five suspects, while Danish authorities charged four additional individuals as part of a joint international investigation. The group is believed to have specifically targeted crypto holders, using physical violence to force access to their digital assets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The case dates back to April, when a woman reported to police in M\u00e1laga that she and her partner had been abducted in the nearby town of Mijas. According to investigators, the couple was ambushed by three or four masked attackers dressed in black and armed with handguns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
During an attempted escape, the male victim was shot in the leg, police said. Both victims were forced into a vehicle and taken to a residential property, where they were held for several hours. Authorities stated that the attackers repeatedly tried to access the couple\u2019s cryptocurrency wallets while they were detained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The woman was released later that night. The man\u2019s body was later found in a wooded area, showing signs of violence in addition to the gunshot wound, according to police reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As part of the investigation, Spanish police carried out six coordinated raids at properties in Madrid and M\u00e1laga. Officers seized weapons, including one real handgun and one imitation firearm, along with a baton, blood-stained clothing, mobile phones, and documents believed to be linked to the crime. Biological evidence tied to the incident was also recovered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Danish police charged four suspects connected to the case, noting that two of them were already serving prison sentences for similar crimes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Authorities say the case reflects a broader and troubling trend of violent attacks against cryptocurrency holders. Known within the industry as \u201cwrench attacks,\u201d these crimes involve physically coercing victims into surrendering access to their digital wallets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to a report from blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis, violent crypto-related attacks are on track to reach record levels in 2025. As of July, at least 35 such incidents had been recorded globally, putting the year on pace to surpass the previous peak seen during the 2021 crypto bull market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Chainalysis also noted a shift in crypto crime away from online hacks and toward physical violence. More than $2.17 billion has already been stolen from cryptocurrency services this year, exceeding total losses from 2024. Nearly one-quarter of those losses came from personal wallet attacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Criminals are increasingly targeting large-value wallets, particularly in regions with growing retail adoption. The Asia-Pacific region has been among the hardest hit, ranking second globally for Bitcoin theft and third for Ether theft. Countries including Japan, Indonesia, South Korea, and the Philippines have reported a rise in incidents, some with severe outcomes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The case highlights how cryptocurrency risks are no longer limited to digital security alone.
