In its year-end research note, the bank said crypto exchanges and trading platforms may struggle to find near-term growth drivers as the speculative retail activity that powered previous bull cycles continues to fade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to Barclays, retail-focused platforms such as Coinbase and Robinhood are under pressure as spot trading a key revenue source continues to decline. The bank noted that spot crypto volumes appear to be heading toward a down year in fiscal 2026, with no obvious catalyst on the horizon to reverse the trend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In earlier market cycles, sharp volatility and strong price momentum encouraged heavy retail participation. That dynamic has weakened significantly, with fewer active traders and lower price swings reducing incentives for new users to enter spot markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Barclays also highlighted the lack of major upcoming catalysts. In the past, events such as the approval of spot Bitcoin ETFs in 2024 and political developments tied to the U.S. election drove sharp spikes in trading activity. While regulatory clarity in the United States could eventually support growth, Barclays cautioned that progress is likely to be slow. The bank pointed to the proposed CLARITY Act, which aims to define whether digital assets fall under securities or commodities regulation and clarify oversight between U.S. regulators.
