But despite the optimism surrounding the sector\u2019s pivot, JPMorgan warns that several mining firms may be <strong>overvalued<\/strong>, primarily due to rising shareholder dilution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a research note published on Nov. 24, JPMorgan upgraded <strong>Cipher Mining<\/strong> and <strong>CleanSpark<\/strong>, while cutting price targets for <strong>Marathon Digital (MARA)<\/strong> and <strong>Riot Platforms (RIOT)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Cipher and CleanSpark Get Upgrades<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>JPMorgan raised its rating on both Cipher Mining and CleanSpark from <strong>\u201cNeutral\u201d to \u201cOverweight,\u201d<\/strong> citing disciplined equity management and stronger positioning in the AI compute race.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Cipher\u2019s price target:<\/strong> Raised from <strong>$12 \u2192 $18<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>CleanSpark\u2019s price target:<\/strong> Maintained at <strong>$14<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Cipher has announced plans to scale its infrastructure to <strong>1.7 gigawatts by 2026<\/strong>, largely to support high-performance AI computing. Meanwhile, CleanSpark recently expanded its Texas datacenter with an additional <strong>200 MW<\/strong> dedicated largely to AI workloads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The shift reflects a broader trend: miners are increasingly using their access to cheap power and large-scale facilities to enter the booming AI compute market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Dilution Risks Threaten MARA and RIOT<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While JPMorgan sees potential in the mining sector\u2019s AI expansion, it also warns that some companies are masking significant risks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many miners rely on <strong>at-the-market (ATM) offerings<\/strong> to raise capital which increases outstanding shares and <strong>dilutes existing shareholders<\/strong>. JPMorgan argues that the market is <strong>underestimating<\/strong> just how much dilution is occurring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the report:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cOur diluted share count figures that underpin our price targets are <strong>20%\u201333% higher<\/strong> than the share count reflected in Bloomberg.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>This suggests that several mining stocks may appear more valuable than they really are when adjusted for actual dilution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because of this, JPMorgan <strong>cut its price targets<\/strong> for two of the sector\u2019s biggest names:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Marathon Digital (MARA):<\/strong><br><strong>$20 \u2192 $13<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Riot Platforms (RIOT):<\/strong><br><strong>$19 \u2192 $17<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The bank cautions that ongoing dilution combined with capital-intensive expansion could limit upside for these firms despite the AI trend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>AI Demand Is Rising, but Challenges Remain<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Bitcoin miners have strong incentives to diversify.
