Binance founder Changpeng Zhao (CZ)<\/strong> has called out gold advocate and long-time Bitcoin critic Peter Schiff<\/strong> over his plan to launch a tokenized gold product<\/strong>, arguing that such offerings are not truly \u201con-chain\u201d assets and fail to embody the trustless nature of cryptocurrencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CZ: Tokenized Gold Isn\u2019t Real On-Chain Gold<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on October 23<\/strong>, Zhao reminded the crypto community that tokenized gold<\/strong> while technically existing on a blockchain is still a digital IOU<\/strong> backed by third-party custodians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTokenized gold is not on-chain gold,\u201d Zhao wrote. \u201cIt\u2019s tokenizing that you trust some third party will give you gold at some later date, even after their management changes, maybe decades later, during a war, etc. It\u2019s a \u2018trust-me-bro\u2019 token.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CZ\u2019s comments emphasize that unlike Bitcoin, which operates without centralized control, tokenized commodities such as gold require trust in intermediaries<\/strong> who hold and redeem the physical metal. This dependency, he argued, undermines one of crypto\u2019s founding principles eliminating the need for trust<\/strong> in centralized entities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Zhao, this reliance on custodians is precisely why gold-backed cryptocurrencies<\/strong> have not gained significant traction in the digital asset space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Peter Schiff\u2019s Tokenized Gold Project<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Zhao\u2019s remarks came in response to Peter Schiff\u2019s recent announcement<\/strong> that he plans to launch a tokenized gold payment system<\/strong> through his company SchiffGold<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking in an interview with Crypto Tengen<\/em>, Schiff said his upcoming product will allow users to buy, hold, and transfer tokenized gold<\/strong> that\u2019s fully backed by real bullion stored in a secure vault. Users would also be able to redeem the tokens for physical gold<\/strong> or use them for payments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBecause gold will maintain its purchasing power, the one thing that makes sense to put on a blockchain is gold,\u201d Schiff said. \u201cIt will do all the things Bitcoin promises but can never do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Schiff also claimed that gold transfers on his platform would be faster and cheaper than Bitcoin transactions<\/strong>, offering \u201cinstant ownership transfers at very low cost.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bitcoin, on the other hand, has been on a mild recovery streak. The world\u2019s largest cryptocurrency rose 0.95% in the past 24 hours<\/strong>, bouncing back above $110,000<\/strong> before settling near $109,287<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Given Bitcoin\u2019s finite supply of 19.93 million coins<\/strong>, it would need to reach roughly $1.5 million per BTC<\/strong> to overtake gold\u2019s total market value. Yet, Zhao believes this milestone is only a matter of time, noting Bitcoin\u2019s unprecedented growth achieving a $1 trillion market cap in just six years<\/strong> after its 2009 launch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
