The Nasdaq-listed digital bank will use <strong>Bitcoin\u2019s Lightning Network<\/strong> to roll out low-cost, near-instant international money transfers beginning with <strong>Mexico later this year<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How the Service Works<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The new feature, announced on <strong>August 19<\/strong> in partnership with payments infrastructure provider <strong>Lightspark<\/strong>, will be the first time a <strong>U.S. bank integrates blockchain-based remittances directly into its core banking app<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s how it works:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Users send U.S. dollars through the <strong>SoFi app<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The system instantly converts the dollars into <strong>Bitcoin<\/strong>, routes them across the <strong>Lightning Network<\/strong>, and then converts them again into the recipient\u2019s local currency.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Funds are deposited directly into the recipient\u2019s <strong>bank account<\/strong> no need to hold or manage crypto.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>At launch, transfers will be available for <strong>Mexico<\/strong>, with additional countries coming in future phases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why It Matters for Users<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>With this update, SoFi\u2019s <strong>11.7 million members<\/strong> will be able to send money abroad at a fraction of the cost of traditional remittance providers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Lower fees:<\/strong> Expected to fall below the national average.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Transparency:<\/strong> All exchange rates and costs disclosed upfront.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Convenience:<\/strong> No third-party services needed everything happens in-app.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>SoFi CEO <strong>Anthony Noto<\/strong> said the goal is to make a \u201cmeaningful improvement\u201d for customers who regularly send money internationally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cBy embedding this directly into SoFi\u2019s app, we\u2019re unlocking the value of blockchain technology to give members faster, smarter, and more inclusive access to their money,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Technology: Universal Money Address (UMA)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>At the heart of this service is <strong>Lightspark\u2019s Universal Money Address (UMA)<\/strong>. It lets users send and receive money using <strong>email-style identifiers<\/strong>, while the system handles the complex routing in the background.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By leveraging the <strong>Lightning Network<\/strong> Bitcoin\u2019s Layer 2 scaling solution designed for fast and cheap micropayments UMA ensures:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Real-time conversion,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Low transaction costs, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Direct bank deposits for recipients.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">SoFi\u2019s Return to Crypto<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This marks SoFi\u2019s <strong>return to digital assets<\/strong>, after regulatory pressure forced it to shut down its crypto services in late <strong>2023<\/strong>. At the time, customers were asked to liquidate or transfer holdings due to unclear compliance rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But in <strong>April 2025<\/strong>, with regulators adopting a more open stance, SoFi confirmed plans to re-enter the crypto sector. By <strong>June<\/strong>, the bank had already resumed <strong>spot crypto trading<\/strong> on its platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new remittance feature builds on that comeback, aligning with SoFi\u2019s broader strategy to integrate blockchain across <strong>lending, investing, payments, and protection products<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bottom line: SoFi\u2019s integration of the <strong>Bitcoin Lightning Network<\/strong> could make global remittances <strong>cheaper, faster, and more accessible<\/strong> for millions of users.
