That puts an end to the widespread speculation that the government had dumped <strong>85% of its crypto reserves<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where Did the Rumor Come From?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It all started with a <strong>Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request<\/strong>, which revealed that the <strong>U.S. Marshals Service<\/strong> currently holds <strong>just 29,000 BTC<\/strong>. Naturally, this raised some red flags and quickly led to headlines suggesting a massive sell-off had occurred.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But Arkham stepped in to set the record straight. That FOIA disclosure, they explained, only accounts for one agency\u2019s stash and <strong>not<\/strong> the holdings managed by the <strong>FBI, DOJ, DEA<\/strong>, or <strong>U.S. Attorney\u2019s Offices<\/strong>. In other words, the government\u2019s total Bitcoin trove is far more dispersed than the public realized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They made the clarification in a response to a post by <strong>Senator Cynthia Lummis<\/strong>, who had flagged the discrepancy on X (formerly Twitter).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">U.S. Bitcoin Holdings vs. the Rest of the World<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>At nearly <strong>200,000 BTC<\/strong>, the U.S. government holds <strong>more Bitcoin than any other nation<\/strong> by a wide margin:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>U.K.<\/strong>: $7 billion in BTC<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Bhutan<\/strong>: $1.3 billion in BTC<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>And while the U.S.\u2019s $24 billion crypto stash only makes up a tiny <strong>0.065% of its $37 trillion national debt<\/strong>, it still holds <strong>symbolic significance<\/strong>. It shows that digital assets especially Bitcoin are increasingly being <strong>treated as strategic holdings<\/strong> at the sovereign level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What If the Government Did Sell?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Even though the rumors turned out to be false, the situation sparked a very real conversation: what if the government <em>did<\/em> decide to sell a massive portion of its Bitcoin in the future?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Would it be to cover part of the national debt? Or to fund emergency fiscal programs?
