We\u2019re talking about <strong>record-breaking exploits, smart contract flaws, and next-gen AI-powered attacks<\/strong> that are leaving even seasoned projects scrambling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Bybit Hack Set the Tone Early<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The biggest blow came in <strong>February<\/strong>, when <strong>Bybit was hit with a $1.46 billion exploit<\/strong> the <strong>largest crypto hack in history<\/strong>. A compromised wallet signer gave attackers full access, and they drained the exchange\u2019s funds in one devastating swoop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately, it didn\u2019t stop there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other major breaches followed:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Infini Protocol<\/strong> lost <strong>$50 million<\/strong> after a disgruntled developer exploited backdoor access.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>zkSync<\/strong> saw <strong>$5 million<\/strong> vanish after what was supposed to be a multi-sig wallet turned out to be a <strong>1-of-1<\/strong> setup.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Nobitex<\/strong>, Iran\u2019s largest exchange, lost <strong>$90 million<\/strong> in a breach that some believe had <strong>political motives<\/strong> behind it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Smart Contract Bugs Still Haunt DeFi<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>DeFi platforms weren\u2019t spared either. In total, <strong>$263 million<\/strong> was lost due to <strong>smart contract vulnerabilities<\/strong>, with the worst incident involving <strong>Cetus<\/strong>. In <strong>May<\/strong>, the project\u2019s faulty overflow check led to a <strong>$223 million loss<\/strong> in liquidity highlighting that sloppy code is still one of crypto\u2019s biggest liabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Phishing Explodes: $600M and Counting<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Phishing and <strong>social engineering scams<\/strong> are evolving fast and hitting harder. Hacken reports that phishing attacks have already topped <strong>$600 million<\/strong> this year. That\u2019s already worse than all of 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most heartbreaking cases involved an elderly U.S. investor who lost <strong>$330 million in BTC<\/strong> after falling victim to an elaborate scam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, <strong>Coinbase users<\/strong> were also targeted in a wave of attacks. After a data breach, fraudsters posing as support agents used real customer data to trick victims into revealing their private keys. That one scheme alone netted over <strong>$100 million<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other common phishing vectors included:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Fake wallet apps<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Malicious browser extensions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Token approval scams disguised inside cloned decentralized apps<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>All quietly stealing funds while users clicked through.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">AI-Powered Hacks Are on the Rise Fast<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>AI is now part of the hacker\u2019s toolkit. Hacken says <strong>AI-driven exploits are up over 1000%<\/strong> compared to 2023. Most of these involved <strong>insecure APIs<\/strong>, but new tactics like <strong>prompt injection, fake agents, and toolchain manipulation<\/strong> are letting attackers bypass even advanced defenses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Crypto Industry\u2019s Biggest Wake-Up Call Yet?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If the trend continues, 2025 could end up being the most damaging year for Web3 security ever.
