In the most recent case, <strong>15 victims from Tasmania<\/strong> collectively lost millions, according to local media reports on <strong>Friday, June 11<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tasmania Police say the consequences for many victims have been devastating and, in some cases, life-altering. The average age of those affected was <strong>65<\/strong>, with typical individual losses around <strong>$165,000<\/strong>. Shockingly, one person lost as much as <strong>$750,000<\/strong> to the scammers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cIn some cases, it delayed retirements,\u201d said Tasmania Police Detective Sergeant Turner. \u201cIt meant that victims were forced to sell assets and then become reliant on social services and payments.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How the Scams Work<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These scams usually start with scammers contacting victims under false pretenses. They might pretend to be a romantic partner, a government official, or tech support staff. Using threats, intimidation, or promises of high investment returns, they pressure people into depositing cash into crypto ATMs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once the cash is converted into crypto and sent to the scammer\u2019s wallet address, the money is essentially gone for good. Unlike traditional bank transfers, crypto transactions can\u2019t be reversed or retrieved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cCommon scams these victims were falling to were romance scams and investment scams,\u201d Detective Sergeant Turner explained. \u201cAlso, government and authority scams, and tech support scams, where you receive a phone call from an agency purporting to be who they\u2019re not.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Authorities Responding With Stricter Rules<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recognizing the growing problem, Australian regulators are starting to crack down. On <strong>June 3<\/strong>, new cash limits were introduced for crypto ATMs in an effort to reduce the risk of scams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, other countries are taking even more drastic steps.
